Service Squad

LOPC launched a new Summer program this year with Service Squad, a service-learning daycamp for 5th & 6th graders! Each day had a service-focused theme, introduced youth to a new type of service opportunity, and included discussion about a daily Bible verse. We learned about the needs in our local county, then headed out to put what we learned into practice by serving in teams of 10! Here are some of our mission partners:

Youth Homes provides housing, education, enrichment, and care for teenagers currently in the foster system. We visited one home and prepped the extensive garden and orchards for a summer camp for these teens.

Trinity Center is a day center for adults without a home. We helped landscape and beautified the outdoor space where many guests like to hang out during the day.

Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano serves 190,000 people each month and distributes over 70,000 pounds of food every working day. We dontated 121 pounds of food that will result in 101 meals and sorted 1,500 pounds of plums for families struggling with food insecurity.

Monument Crisis Center is a family resource center that provides food, education, and referrals to individuals, families, children, and seniors in need. Our teams packed boxes for food distribution and helped set up for a big fathers day and seniors’ event.

Shelter Inc. provides temporary housing for families without a house, mostly with young children. We helped staff provide a summer camp for children including games, crafts, and nutritional snacks.

Thursday Fellowship is a group of seniors who meet at LOPC weekly for lunch, fellowship, and a fun program. Our teams visited seven members of Thursday Fellowship at their homes, spending time connecting the generations within our church community and providing some assistance with home maintenance projects.

Our Service Squad did an incredible job getting out into the community and sharing God’s love out loud with words and actions! We hope this experience will inspire youth and families to continue to meet the needs of those they encounter. For photos of our experience, click here!
