Our theme verse for the day is 1 John 3:18, which says, “Let us not love with words or speech but with action and in truth.” We talked about why it’s important not to just love people in our hearts, but to show it with our actions as well. We also heard a story written by a 10-year-old girl about her personal experience with homelessness in preparation for our service action for the day.

The Green Squad started a camp for children from families previously experiencing homelessness now living at Contra Costa Interfaith Housing. The camp is an “Under the Sea” theme. They started by reading a story and painting fish that represented their uniqueness. Then, everyone enjoyed beating the heat with water games!

The Blue & Red Squads visited Shelter Inc., another organization which provides long-term housing for families experiencing homelessness. Alongside many of the residents, we planted and weeded a vegetable garden, painted a picnic table and benches in the playground area, and set up a new sandbox and water table. Then, we enjoyed cooling down with some water play with the children and popsicles!

It was another very hot day, but the campers persisted in their work, taking lots of breaks to cool off and get water. Great job, squad!
