Salinas Mission Trip – Service Day Five

Today is the final service day!
Before I get into today’s events, I want to highlight Keris & Allison, our amazing youth directors.
The planning and organizing that goes into a week long mission trip is a LOT, especially since we didn’t partner with another organization to take care of running the trip.
Not only did Keris and Allison put in so much effort into this, they also work hard at all the service projects we go to.
Thank you both for all your amazing work and your love for all the youth (and adult advisors too :))

I also want to give a shout out to our worship team – Tyler Adkison, Jackie Patton and Nolan Carpenter.
They’ve done an awesome job leading us in worship during the evening programs.

While we were in four separate teams going to two different service projects per team each day, for today, we were all together.
We started the day in a Community Garden run by ‘Everyone’s Harvest’. Their mission is to provide access to healthy, affordable produce and for each community to have a fair and sustainable food system.
Garden therapy has proved especially beneficial to adults with developmental disabilities and veterans with trauma.
Our teams arrived at 8 am on site and did a variety of projects – we pulled weeds, added top soil to garden beds, spread mulch, trimmed ‘ice plants’ on the pathway, did some minor construction projects, etc.
The organization’s executive director, and the mayor of the city of Marina also worked with us in the garden.

From there, all 4 teams went to migrant services at Sherwood Elementary School to watch the kids perform dances that they’d practiced all week.
They provided lunch for all of us and we ate with them.

Most teams then had downtime while Team 1 went to Iglesia Bautista Laurel to go to VBS.
Team 2 had bathroom/shower cleaning duties at our base.

At 6:30 pm, the other three teams joined Team 1 at Iglesia Bautista Laurel to participate in their VBS celebrations.
We provided dinner for everyone there and ate with them.
After dinner, we went into their sanctuary where they wrapped up the VBS, had some games, and recognized the adult advisors and all the youth participants from LOPC by giving small tokens of appreciation.
All of our youth also danced to one of the VBS songs in Spanish.

Once we were done there, we came back to our base and got into a time of worship and sang some songs led by the worship team.
After that, Pastor Lauren Gully led us in communion with cranberry juice and bagel (we also had gluten free bread).
It was so meaningful to end the mission trip with communion.

After communion, we had downtime till lights out at 11 pm.
We played music, sang along, danced, wrote care cards, etc.

Tomorrow (Saturday), we will pack up, clean our rooms and will do a small service project at the Church we’re staying by cleaning their windows and will then head back to the bay area!

Thank you all for your prayers this week.
