“The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hand.”Psalm 19:1

Have you ever been outside in a thunderstorm?

Ok, so it may not be the smartest idea, but it is truly awe-inspiring. I was leading a middle school mission trip in Arizona. The team and chaperones served at a ranch home for adults with disabilities. If you can imagine 40 tweens working all day in dry 100 degree heat, breaking up soil and moving rocks to make way for a new garden, you can imagine the sort of day I had; exhausting.

That evening we returned to our stifling camp to recuperate. We sat on the floor making friendship bracelets and idle chatter. The windows and doors were thrown open anticipating a breeze when, unexpectedly, a rumbling sounded in the distance and a downpour began.

What relief! The sweaty tweens and leaders rushed outside to feel the rain wash away the day’s dirt. The ground and people alike drank in the deluge. Then a new sound arose. The youth had begun to sing:

Indescribable, uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name
You are amazing God
All powerful, untamable
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God

As we sang, lightning sparked. The flat desert allowed an expansive view of the storm. The sound was earth-shaking, the flash magnificent. In that moment I finally understood the enormity of God’s awe-inspiring power and it was gloriously indescribable.

God, You are the One who brings relief to a tired people in the desert, the God who creates stunning beauty within a crashing storm. Help us to reclaim our awe of You as we discover Your creativity and power all around us each day. When we experience drought in our lives, we turn to You for refreshment and rest. We need to experience Your indescribable presence today… Amen.
