We hope that you are all staying happy and healthy in the midst of this unprecedented time. Unfortunately, we have difficult news – though we do have hopeful updates for the future. We have made the decision to cancel all of our Family Ministry service-learning events for this summer. This includes Vacation Bible Camp, Service Squad, the Middle School Mission Trip to San Francisco, and the High School Mission Trip to Washington.
We held off on this decision as long as we could, but we have concluded that holding camp the week of June 1st is no longer feasible given the changing nature of the CDC’s recommendations and the state’s response, the cancellation of in-person school for the rest of this school year, the shortened time frame with which to plan for camp, concern for our volunteers, and cancellations from our mission partners themselves.
We recognize how disappointing this may be for your family, and we share in that disappointment. We are committed to staying in contact with you and your family during this time, though, through offerings including:
- The Youth Ministry Instagram Page, featuring daily devotionals and more;
- The Children’s Ministry Blog, featuring online Sunday school lessons, spiritual practices, and more;
- Weekly Zoom calls for YOW, BTW, alumni, and Lunchtime Prayers for children and families;
- Weekly email updates from both ministries; if you have not been receiving these weekly emails, contact Ryan (ryan@LOPC.org) or Keris (keris@LOPC.org) to be added to the list.
The Family Ministry Team is already brainstorming ideas for how to gather together again once the state has deemed it safe to do so. It may not look like how we originally imaged our summers , but we are working with other colleagues in the region and experts across the country to figure out how to help our kids re-enter the community, process the trauma of this time, and celebrate coming back together. We will keep you updated, through our weekly emails, on that plan once we know more from the state.
As a final note, we miss you and your kids. Vacation Bible Camp, Service Squad, and our mission trips are some of the biggest, most energetic programs we get to do in Family Ministry, and we are as heartbroken as you are that this year will look different. We are all in this together, though, and by cancelling our programs, we are all helping to keep our most vulnerable populations, and each other, safe. We are greatly looking forward to the time when we can gather in ministry together with your children again.
Please let us know if you have any questions. In the meantime, stay connected, stay happy, and stay healthy!
In Christ’s love,
