The week of April 19th – During the month of April, we are focusing on the virtue of humility.
Find a time this week to gather as a family, read a Bible passage, respond as a family to what you have heard, and pray together.

April Virtue                  Humility: Putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve
What is a virtue?     A virtue is something that God does in us to change the world around us.

Bible Story                   Lean on Me (Servant Principle) • Philippians 2:3-8

Bottom Line                 Put others first because Jesus put you first.

Memory Verse             Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves. Philippians 2:3 (NIrV)

Basic Truth                   I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

When we talk about Jesus today, there are so many amazing things we remember about him. We look back on his life, his teachings, and the way he treated people and we want to follow his example. That was also true for the people who were followers in the years just after Jesus had died and come back to life. When the apostle Paul wrote to the people at the church in Philippi, he wanted them to remember all the ways Jesus put others first. Paul knew that if they remembered Jesus, they’d be able to put each other first as well.

Paul explained that we should value others more than ourselves—just like Jesus did.

No one had ever seen the kind of humility that Jesus showed. The way he had treated people was unforgettable. Jesus put people first—showing them love and compassion—even when no one else would. And of course, the biggest, most incredible act of humility that Jesus showed was when he gave up his life for us. That single act was completely upside down from the way things normally worked, and it changed the whole world!

Today, we can follow Jesus’ example with the way we treat the people around us—whether it’s someone we’ve just met or someone we see every day of our lives. [Bottom Line] “Put others first because Jesus put you first.

We can think about Jesus and remember how he put us first. Then we can choose to show the same honor, respect, and love to others that we’d want THEM to show US. We can choose to [Basic Truth] treat others the way we want to be treated.

How do you know that Jesus put you first?

  • Why does Jesus putting us first mean that we need to put others first?
  • What keeps you from putting others first?
  • What can you do to get rid of those barriers and put others first more often?

Jesus chose to come as a person, just like you and me. He chose to live a regular life instead of entering the world as a rightful king or powerful ruler. Jesus came to serve, to love others, to help, and teach about God and God’s loving ways. Jesus gave us the ultimate example of humility by choosing to put us first.

Take out of a piece of paper and write the word “JESUS” in large block letters in the center of the page. All around the page, write out words that describe how you could become more like Jesus.

Here are a few examples to get you started: loving, listening, serving, helping.

When you finish, take a look at your page and ask God to help you follow him by putting others first this week.

Dear God:

Thank you for the example Jesus gave of how we should treat others. In the heat of the moment, when things are at their craziest for us, please help us hear the nudge of your Holy Spirit. Help us to think like Jesus and act like him. Help us to take his example and live it out in our lives. Please help us to slow down long enough to remember what Jesus did and put others first, like he did. We love you, God, and we want to love you more. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
