The week of April 5th – During the month of April, we are focusing on the virtue of humility.
Find a time this week to gather as a family, read a Bible passage, respond as a family to what you have heard, and pray together.
Humility: Putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve
What is a virtue? A virtue is something that God does in us to change the world around us.
Bible Story: The Way (Jesus Prays in Gethsemane) • Matthew 26:36-56
Bottom Line Put others first.
Memory Verse Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves. Philippians 2:3 (NIrV)
Basic Truth I should treat others the way I want to be treated.
Jesus gave us the ultimate example of humility. He put us first. And you and I can choose to follow his example today.
So what does that look like for us? Well, when’s the last time you let someone ELSE pick the restaurant when you go out to eat—even if it’s a place you don’t like? What about letting someone else pick the video game you play together? Or at recess, let someone else decide what to do. You can show humility and let others pick the game they want, the swing they want, or the teammates they want.
Humility is like ‘anti-selfishness.’ It’s taking that ‘me-first’ attitude and turning it upside down. Instead, it’s putting others first and [Basic Truth] treating them the way you want to be treated.
That means putting someone else’s needs above your own. It means giving someone else what THEY want, not demanding that you get what YOU want. It’s not easy. But with God’s help, we can choose to [Bottom Line] put others first.
Why are certain people easier to put first than others?
- Without naming names, who is easier? Who is harder?
- How can you put someone else first this week?
- Who is someone specific you can put first and how are you going to do it?
This month is all about humility, putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve. What do you think you deserve? Maybe: winning; getting your way; being number one.
Humility is just the opposite. Humility isn’t about you, it’s about the people around you. That means you have to pay attention when you find yourself becoming impatient with others or pushing your way to the front. Because loving with humility means we put others first. What if you made a new list and considered what others deserve?
Fill in the blanks below as you think about putting others first. The first one is completed to give you an example:
My brother deserves patience, even when he’s driving me crazy.
My sister deserves _______________________________________________.
My teacher deserves _____________________________________________.
My friend deserves _______________________________________________.
My mom/dad deserves ___________________________________________.
Take a look at your answers above. Ask God to help you think about what others deserve so you can put them first this week.
Thank you for Jesus. Even in his hardest moments, Jesus chose to put us first. Help us to follow Jesus’ example of humility as we choose to [Bottom Line] put others first. Please help us to always follow you no matter how difficult things might be. We love you, God, and we want to love you more. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
