During the month of June, the focus is on the virtue of confidence. You and your family are invited to reflect on what it means to be confident in God and God’s love for you. Find time to gather together as a family, say the prayer, read or listen to the prompts, respond, and act on what you have learned about yourselves and your relationship with God.

June Virtue                      Confidence – Living like you believe what God says is true

What is a virtue?          A virtue is something that God does in us to change the world around us.

GATHER                            together in prayer

LISTEN                                through scripture; readings; stories; music; videos

RESPOND                         to what you have heard

ACT                                       in service to what God is calling you to

Gather together as a family and pray this prayer:

O God,

You made us in your own image

And redeemed us through Jesus your Son.

Look with compassion on the whole human family;

Take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts;

Break down the walls that separate us;

Unite us in bonds of love;

And work through our struggle and confusion

To accomplish your purposes on earth;

That, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony

Around your heavenly throne;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Story of Esther – Watch this YouTube video via the following link:

Then each week during the month of June, gather your family and read part of the story of Esther in the Bible.

This Bible story can be found online at Bible Gateway via this link:

Week 1                 Esther 1-3

Week 2                 Esther 4-5

Week 3                 Esther 6-7

Week 4                 Esther 8-10

As you read each week, discuss the following questions:

Week 1

Why does King Ahasuerus get angry at Queen Vashti?

Who does the king choose as his new queen?

Who is Mordecai and how is he related to Esther?

Who is Haman and why does he want to destroy the Jews?

Week 2

Why does Esther agree to talk to the king about Haman’s plan?

Was it easy or hard for Esther to have the confidence to approach the king?

How did Mordecai encourage Esther when she didn’t feel confident?

What does Haman plan to do to Mordecai?

Week 3

Why does the king want to honor Mordecai?

How does Haman feel about the king’s desire to honor Mordecai?

How does Esther gain the confidence to speak to the king about Haman’s plans?

What does the king do when he finds out what Haman is planning?

Week 4

What happens to Esther and Mordecai after Haman is gone?

How did God give Esther the confidence to save her people?

How does God give you confidence to do what is right?

The story of Esther reminds us to put our confidence is God instead of ourselves. Haman was very confidence in himself, but his self-centeredness led to his downfall.  Esther put her confidence in God and through God she was able to save her people.  When we are overly confidence in ourselves, we lose sight of God.  When we put our confidence in God, God can more easily help us navigate our lives and show us how we can help others.

As a family, talk about how you can be confident in God. Where do you need to ask for God’s help with things that are difficult?  Where do you need to ask for forgiveness for being too self-centered?  How can you live your lives differently knowing that God has placed you here for such a time as these?

Food for Thought

And you will have confidence, because there is hope; you will be protected and take your rest in safety. Job 11:18 (NRSV)

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1 (NRSV)

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Psalm 27:13 (NIV)

It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in mortals. Psalm 118:8 (NRSV)
