For the week of October 8th –  During the month of October, your family is invited to focus on the virtue of stewardship and to reflect on the various aspects of what it means to be a good steward of God’s creation. Find a time this week to gather as a family, say a prayer, listen to or read a prompt, respond as a family to what you have heard and then act on the suggestion for the week.

October Virtue       STEWARDSHIP: taking care of what you have because it all belongs to God.

What is a virtue?   A virtue is something that God does in us to change the world around us.

GATHER                    together in prayer

LISTEN                        through scripture; readings; stories; music; videos

RESPOND                 to what you have heard

ACT                               in service to what God is calling you to

Gather together as a family and pray the stewardship prayer:

Stewardship Prayer

Lord, how can we remember all your creation in this offering?

You have given us time and the seasons.

You have given us families and friends.

You have given us our family of the Church.

Accept our offering of love.

You give us the wonder and marvel of summer, with the warmth and fun of faith.

You give us the colour and change of autumn, and cause us to see the need for change.

You give us the chill and rain of winter, with time for us to sit and think.

You give us the new life and growth of springtime, with the reminder of new life in Christ.

Creator God, Lord of the Universe,

Accept our gifts and our lives that the world and all people may praise your name.   Amen.

Have one person in your family read 1 Peter 4:10-11.

This Bible passage can be found online at Bible Gateway via this link:

In this week’s scripture reading, we’re asked to think about the particular gifts that each of us have.  These gifts can help us to be good stewards for God. What are some of your gifts (examples: helpful, cheerful, funny, organized, creative, etc.)?

Write down the gifts of each person in your family.  Then brainstorm together about how each person’s gifts can be used to be good stewards for God.

We are all gifted. That is our inheritance. Ethel Waters

We are all gifted, but we have to discover the gift, uncover the gift, nurture and develop the gift and use it for the Glory of God and for the liberation struggle of our people. Louis Farrakhan

It takes discipline and compassion to awaken the divine in ourselves long enough to recognize the divine in another. Mary Anne Radmacher
