Stained Glass Windows of the Sanctuary
Centered within the four main concrete pillars of the sanctuary are four stained glass windows. Each window is fifteen feet high and only one foot wide. The theme of all four windows is “Surrounded by God’s revelation in the history of man”.
The left rear window is “God’s revelation in creation”. A burst of brilliance like exploding jewels conveys a picture of the life force.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”.Genesis 1:1
The left front window is “God’s revelation in the flood”. Above heavenly blue tones is the promised rainbow and a star-studded sky.
“…the rainbow shall be in the cloud; and I will…remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature upon the earth”.Genesis 9:16
The right front window is “God’s revelation in His reconciling act”. A spring-green cross above royal purple and blood-red represents the love and sacrifice of Jesus, the Christ.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”.John 3:16
The right rear window is “God’s revelation in the Resurrection”. A turquoise embryonic form against a gold and crimson background suggests new life.
“I am the resurrection and the life; he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever believes in me shall never die”.John 11:25

| The resplendent colors in these windows are caused by the same impurities which glass occurs in nature – nickel, cobalt, copper and gold. When lightening strikes sand, the heat sometimes fuses it into long, slender glass tubes called “fulgarites”, sometimes known as “petrified lightening”. Glass artists carefully control the ingredients and blow the glass into elongated shapes. The tube is then cut, and as the hot glass falls flat, irregularities are formed. These prized shapes and colors have been found in ancient Pompeii and Rome. Mark Adams, the San Francisco artist who designed and made these windows, searched through many factories to find the right combination of color, thickness and brightness, which imparted great subtlety in the combination of color and light in these windows. |
