Tips for Parenting in the Pews
  • The Nursery welcomes children ages five and younger that find it hard to sit for a full hour
  • The Parent Room is available for parents with young children if they need a change of location but still want to follow the service on a TV moniter.
  • Prepare children by talking positively about worshipping as a family
  • Sit close to the front so children can see
  • Children's Bibles are available in the pews.  Young children may bring a favorite blanket or small stuffed toy. Hand-held electronics like video games are very distracting to others and bringing these to worship suggests to children that nothing of interest happens in church
  • Activity booklets that reflect the theme of the service are provided for your children by the ushers.  They don't distract but help a child focus
  • Help your child follow the worship bulletin and model appropriate responses (standing when asked, singing, closing eyes for prayer) and answer questions quietly
  • Feel free to accompany your child for "Time for Young Disciples"
  • Give your children the friendship pad to register their presence and provide them with sufficient time to enter their names
  • Relax and keep a sense of humor!

Children learn best through experience. If children are to become adults who regularly worship God and belong to a faith community,  then parents must be the role models. It is not enough for children to identify with church programs like Godly Play, LOGOS or the Youth Group. Most adults who attend church regularly did so with their families when they were children.

The first Sunday of each month LOPC celebrates Intergenerational Worship with communion.  Many adults have made the comment, “but if my children are with me in the service I cannot focus on worship for myself”.  Maybe, on this particular Sunday, we need to think first of the promises we made during our children's baptism, to nurture their faith and guide them in Jesus Christ's footsteps, and our own worship needs second.
