IJM was founded in 1997 and is a human rights agency that rescues victims of violence, sexual exploitation, slavery, and oppression for people that cannot rely on local authorities for relief. IJM staff members (human rights experts, attorneys and law enforcement professionals) fill the void and serve as advocates when the poor have been oppressed, treated unjustly or exploited. And very importantly, IJM provides access to services to help victims transition to their new lives and to encourage long-term success.
LOPC established a formal relationship with IJM in October, 2004, which included a three-year pledge to the opening of a regional office inGuatemala City. In doing so, LOPC and the Guatemala Mission team seek to provide indirect support through building relationships with influential leaders. Members of the team have visited the IJM Guatemala City office in 2005 and 2006, with plans to do so again in ’07.
