What is Stephen Ministry?

Our congregation's Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide ongoing, one-on-one Christian care to individuals in our congregation and community who are experiencing transitions in their lives.  Stephen Ministry is confidential.  The identity of those receiving care and what takes place in each caring relationship remains private. A Stephen Minister is...
  • a congregation member with a gift for listening  who was carefully selected to serve in this role
  • a lay person who has received 80 hours training in providing emotional and spiritual care
  • a caring Christian who listens, cares, prays, supports, encourages and walks beside a person who is hurting
  • a committed caregiver who participates in regular supervision meetings and continuing education
  • someone who will "be there" for his or her care receiver, meeting faithfully for about an hour each week, for as long as there's a need

Who needs Stephen Ministry?

We all experience challenges in life - times when we could benefit from the support of a caring Christian friend. Stephen Ministers are ready to provide the emotional and spiritual care we need when faced with a crisis or difficulty.

Some people find it hard to admit they need help, but in fact, realizing that one needs help in a life transition and then seeking  that help is a sign of strength.  Often talking to an objective person in complete confidence can be easier or more practical than sharing with a family member or friend.
